Caring for Your Treasures: The Essential Guide

At Didi's Jewellery, we believe that fine jewellery is designed to last a lifetime, but even the most durable metals and gemstones require mindful care. To ensure your diamonds and coloured stones continue to sparkle for generations, follow these professional care and storage guidelines.

1. The "Last On, First Off" Rule

Choosing a diamond should be an inspiring journey, not a stressful one. While it may seem like a world of complex technicalities, the "4Cs" are simply a helpful language designed to help you compare stones with confidence. By understanding these four traits, you move from feeling overwhelmed to being empowered to find a piece that perfectly balances beauty and value.

2. Daily Wear & Safety

Best not to wear your jewellery while swimming (chlorine can weaken gold), showering (soap scum creates a film), or exercising (sweat and impact can loosen settings). Remove all jewellery before any heavy cleaning or heavy duty activities. Impact can warp bands or loosen stone settings, while sweat and grime can build up in delicate crevices.

You are advised to occasionally hold your jewellery up to your ear and give it a tiny shake. If you hear a "click," the stone is loose and should be brought in to check immediately.

3. How to Clean Your Jewellery at Home

For most diamond and hard-stone jewellery (like Sapphires and Rubies), a simple home cleaning is highly effective.

The Process

A. Soak the piece in lukewarm water mixed with a few drops of mild dish soap.

B. Gently scrub with a soft-bristled toothbrush to remove hidden oils and dirt.

C. Rinse thoroughly (make sure the drain is plugged!) and pat dry with a lint-free cloth. Note: Never use toothpaste or baking soda, as these are abrasive and can scratch precious metals.

Note: Gemstones (including pearls, sapphires, emeralds, opals and enamel)

We do not recommend using an ultrasonic cleaning device for gemstones (Emeralds, Tanzanite, Opals, Topaz, Turquoise, Kunzite, Agates), pearls or enamel as this may cause damage. Likewise extreme temperatures may cause damage, instead use lukewarm water.

4. Smart Storage

Use a fabric-lined jewellery box with individual compartments. Diamonds can scratch other diamonds and easily scratch any other gemstone or metal they touch. Also, store your jewellery in a cool, dry place. For silver pieces, consider adding an anti-tarnish strip to the box.

When travelling, it is best to individually packing each piece of jewellery into separate plastic bags to avoid scratching & then put them all into our Didi's Jewellery travel pouch.

5. Expert’s Note: Professional Maintenance

We recommend a professional "check and polish" at least once a year. We will check for loose prongs, thinning bands, or damaged clasps. We can also offer a free cleaning service when you bring this into our showroom.
